The buddy film is a popular one because of how enjoyable it can be to see dynamics between two completely different characters, and how they overcome situations together. Here is 5 of the best duos in the movies!
True Romance (1993) Clarence and Alabama
This truly cool American crime movie provided us with one of the most memorable duos. You can’t help but adore Clarence and Alabama, a freshly loved-up couple in the midst of a fast-paced, colourful, fantasy-like adventure against baddies and drug lords.
Finding Nemo (2003) Marlin and Dory
When prudent Marlin meets unsuspecting Dory, they seem worlds apart. But when it comes to duos, the fun part is watching how they become a great team in the end. The initially conflicting elements of their personalities turn out to offer up advantages and complement each other’s downfalls for a win-win situation in the end! And it all works out just fine! Let’s just hope Dory doesn’t go missing … oh, wait!
Thelma & Louise (1991)
Thelma and Louise are arguably the most kick-ass pair of women in cinema history. In this case, the convention of the buddy film is broken, with two working class females as the central focus. They really are two characters we care about, and they really care about each other.
Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969)
The close companionship between Butch and The Sundance Kid, two unforgettable outlaws of the Wild West, is a prominent one in cinema history. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it could even be THE original bromance.
Pulp Fiction (1994) Vincent and Jules
Here is the infamous Vincent and Jules, a pair that will go down in cinema history for many, many years to come. We’re not used to seeing established hitmen discussing the French term for quarter pounder burgers, and whether or not a foot massage ranks highly in the infidelity code, and that’s just one thing that makes these two unorthodox characters one of the best duos in the movies.

Good choices, FC, though I am not a fan of Pixar animations myself.
I can think of lots of duos that I have enjoyed, although I wouldn’t say I have a real favourite that springs to mind. Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy in ’48 Hours’. Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis in ‘Kalifornia’. The creepy pairing of Arno Frisch and Frank Geitring in the original ‘Funny Games’ (1997) is memorable, certainly. Perhaps one of my favourites is the father/son pairing of Max Von Sydow and Pelle Hvenegaard in the marvellous 1987 film ‘Pelle The Conqueror’. (Which I can unreservedly recommend)

Thanks for reading Pete! Some really great recommendations in there, and two which I haven’t seen – ‘Pelle The Conqueror’ and ‘Kalifornia’. Just had a little bit of a read and they look like fantastic films, they’re now on my list! I think it could be argued that Brad Pitt was in better movies when he was younger.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen 48 hours but it’s a good one. Another great duo on the funny side would be Neil and Del in ‘Planes, Trains And Automobiles’ – gotta be one of my favourite comedies!
I’m intrigued as to your dislike of Pixar. I’m certainly not judging you because diversity in opinions is what makes the world go round.. any particular reason or any elements that you don’t like about Pixar movies?

It might be an age thing, FC. I love the old Disney cartoons, Sudio Ghibli, and Anime too. I just can abide that ‘gloss’ of Pixar, and I always feel like I am watching CGI, and not lovingly drawn cartoons. If you like animation, I can recommend these two, to add to that long list!

‘Pelle’ is a wonderful film, and Von Sydow is just perfect for it.

‘an age thing’ – but surely you’re young at heart! I’d agree with your thoughts on the glossiness of Pixar, and it lacks the humble, sketchiness of earlier Disney days.
Shamefully, I’ve not seen many Studio Ghibli films. I’ve watched ‘Ponyo’ and ‘Spirited Away’, btu I need to educate myself on more anime. Again, thanks for the recommendations, the list goes on! I’ll be tackling it over the coming weeks.

I watched the remake. It was made by the same director of course, scene for scene, and the same script, translated. Tim Roth is always good, but I found it ultimately pointless, as I generally do. Just a remake for those who can’t be doing with subtitles, and the original had far more impact, especially at the time. Even now, I find that film hard to watch.

Hope and Crosby from any Road movie, Abbot and Costello from any of their films and probably a ton more but can’t bring any to mind.

Excellent selections, with so many great duos to choose from it must have been difficult to pare your list down to just 5.
Off the top of my head some of my favourites are: Val and Earl in Tremors, The Driver and The Mechanic (Two Lane Blacktop), Peter Fonda and Warren Oates in The Hired Hand and Race With the Devil, Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges (Thunderbolt and Lightfoot) and Maggie and Sam from Addicted to Love.

Great eclectic list of Duo’s, you hit a lot of genres there very nice! A few of my favorites: Conner (Chris Lambert) and Ramirez (Sean Connery) from Highlander, Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in The Thomas Crown Affair, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson and Scarlett Johansen and Thora Birch in Ghostworld.
